This is a place to discuss the Folkview Community Platform and the communities / domains it will serve.
The Folkview Community Platform is not ready for public release.
The Folkview Community Platform is a social networking project with a focus on Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Expression, and Freedom of Association. This blog is not itself operated on the Folkview Community Platform because that platform is not yet stable.
Here is what is planned.
Your own Social Networking * Web Site * Blog * Online Store * More * All Free
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” – The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America
Although many nations and international communities preserve freedom of speech, expression, and association with similar language, those guarantees do not generally extend into the private sector. As a result, services such as the online giant Facebook tend to use their influence to determine social policy by restricting the content their users share.
We have a different vision of the Internet. A vision where the service provider does not use censorship to promote social policy. A community in which the community itself decides what is decent and what is not by choosing to view content or chooses not to view content. A vision where instead of a massively complex and highly interpretive Terms of Service / Acceptable Use Agreement, the users are reminded that they are responsible for the content they contribute.
It seems Facebook believes photos of mothers breastfeeding their child is “obscene” (1). Over the years, internet chatter has claimed social networking services have used their influence to address other topics as well. We have a different view of social networking, one in which as the service provider we have no opinion as to content. We provide a service. Our users provide the content. Our users position the content. Our users determine the search position of the content.
We are a Service Provider – When you join one of the many domains on the Folkview Community Platform, your screen name becomes a subdomain at that domain. Example: If you use the screen name newuser while joining domain.com, then your first website will be http://newuser.domain.com. You will able to sign in using your email address and then manage that site as well as any others you create. These are YOUR web sites. You are responsible for its content. You are responsible for adhering to any applicable laws. We will, of course, assist authorities with any investigation into illegal content.
We are a Search Engine – Each domain on the Folkview Community Platform has one subdomain (website) operated by the staff of the Folkview Community Platform. Example: http://www.domain.com or simply http://domain.com. That site operates as a search engine for the others sites. When you search the forums, rather than searching a central forum you are searching the many forums operated by other users just like you on the Folkview Community Platform.
By combining the roles of a Service Provider and a Search Engine, we believe we can create a social networking service which allows the maximum Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Expression, and Freedom of Assembly allowed by law.
The Down Side – Some will argue that the downside of Freedom of Speech is that it does not mean Freedom of Speech that you agree with. Like the Internet itself, we see a Fred Phelps in one corner of the Folkview Community Platform and a GLB Rights Group in another. We do not believe this is a downside as members and instead believe that members of each domain (community) will be able to properly aggregate the content in such a way that material objectionable to that community falls to the bottom and goes relatively unnoticed.
Time will Tell – Will the Folkview Community Platform work? Like the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, we believe so and that is the only official possition on social policy that will be had by the Folkview Community Platform.
